Acceptable Surface temperatures
All gas ranges certified by the American Gas Association (A.G.A.) and electric ranges listed by Underwriters Laboratories (U.L.) must meet specific limits for the surface temperature of exterior panels, control knobs, and door handles. These temperature limits can only be maintained when the oven door is fully closed and sealed against the front frame. If the oven door or hinges are damaged or not properly adjusted, they must be repaired or replaced to ensure the appliance meets the required safety standards.

Gas & Electric Ranges Oven Preparation for Testing (Set-Up)
Conventional
(Non-Self Clean)
- Set Oven Thermostat at 400ºF (190ºC).
- Verify Oven Calibration of thermostat(s) @ 400ºF (190ºC).
- Measure surface temperature one (1) hour after oven(s) reach set temperature.
No Temperature limitations apply for:
Ovens vent areas.
Surface cooking areas as illustrated.
Pyrolytic
(Self Clean Ovens)
- Set Oven to Self Clean Cycle for at least 3 hours.
- Measure surface temperatures after 3 hours
of operation.
Note: Call customer ahead of time to set oven for self clean cycle a minimum of 3 hours
prior to your scheduled arrival!
No Temperature limitations apply for:
- Oven vent areas.
- Above self clean oven door handle.
Test probe contact time and pressure
The test probe should be preheated for 15 seconds to a temperature close to the
allowable temperature of the surface being tested. After preheating, the test probe
should be applied with a 5 lb. force for ten (10) seconds at each test point, while
reading and recording the meter.
Notes:
- The full diameter of the probe tip must contact the test area.
- The probe should be allowed to cool to room temperature between measurements.
Method for taking surface temperatures
- Use an acceptable surface probe and meter. Example(s) would be: Thermocouple wire J or K type w/round flat surface.
- Area to be measured must be clean.
- See attached charts for allowable maximum surface temperatures; Chart 1 Surfaces and Chart 2 Knobs & Handles.
- Surface temperatures of oven doors and side panels should be checked no closer than one (1) inch from any point along the surface edge of the door / oven parting line. A guide would be three (3) inches in from the edge.
5. No temperature limitations are assigned to the oven vent area. The setting of the oven thermostat will determine the temperature of the oven vent area
